To become a Canadian citizen, you must

  • Be a permanent resident.

  • Have lived in Canada 1,095 days in the last 5 years.

  • Have filed your taxes.

  • Letter of no criminal record.

  • Pass an exam on your rights, responsibilities and knowledge of Canada.

  • If you are between 18 and 54 years old, you must prove your level of French or English.

Depending on your situation, there may be additional requirements.

No, marrying a Canadian citizen does not grant you citizenship. If you want to become a Canadian citizen, you need to follow the same steps as everyone else. There is no special process for spouses of Canadian citizens.

You must meet several requirements to apply for citizenship. You must be physically present in Canada for at least 1,095 days during the 5 years just before the date you applied. This includes time as

  • Permanent resident

  • Temporary resident (legally authorized to stay in Canada)

  • Protected person

Your Canadian spouse can sponsor you to become a permanent resident if

  • You do not live in Canada, or

  • You are not a permanent resident

You can apply for citizenship if

  • Is a permanent resident
    Have been physically present in Canada long enough

  • Meet the other requirements

There are different rules for determining whether children of Canadians born outside of Canada have Canadian citizenship.
